Fresh Homemade Tortillas! Food Storage Recipes

A lot of people think tortillas aren’t worth the effort…but wait until you try this recipe!  It’s easy and tastes delicious…so much better than those store bought ones.  Of course they are, everything is so much better freshly made.  I don’t know why but it amazes me every time!  Of course I have some tutorial videos for you to watch as well so you can SEE just how easy it is! Now this recipe won’t make corn tortillas this is a FLOUR tortilla recipe.

Flour Tortillas
2 c. flour
½ t. salt
1 heaping ¼ t. baking powder
¼ c. oil
2/3 c. hot water

Mix all ingredients in food processor. Mix until it forms a ball of dough. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rest for 15 minutes. Uncover and form until balls of dough just larger than a golf ball. Cover with damp cloth and allow to rest for 15 minutes – 1 hour. Flatten and roll out. Cook on hot skillet flipping when bubbles form.

This is the first tortilla tutorial I have watched (and read) that enabled me to make tortillas successfully. I used a different recipe, but the videos did an excellent job explaining how to roll them out - without them sticking to the counter or the board...Thank you :)

We tried these last night and they were fabulous! and so easy!! Thanks for sharing.

I just tried the tortillas tonight with my tacos. I bought some store bought tortillas as well to use as a backup, but there was no need. They were delicious! You also inspired me to try canned roast beef instead of ground beef and it was a masterpiece. Thanks Crystal!
  • I can't believe Ive only just found you. Looking forward to much happy stalking.

Lol! Most of the time I don't have a camera man! My secret is out...I just put my little camera on a bunch of #10 cans and record. Sorry if you can't see it that well...but I'm just ONE person and I try and do my best.

I love your videos and I love to see you but, could your camera man point it to the product while you are mixing so we can see what is going on and if ours is looking the same?!
I am sorry if I missed this but, does the food processor have to have a dough hook to make the tortilla dough?
Thanks for all your hard work.
  • Can't wait to try these! I don't know what homemade tortillas taste like! :o
I still have a big bag of mission tortillas .. I'll wait until they are gone to try these!

If made with WW flour.. do we need to modify the recipe somehow???

I've been wondering how to make these for ages. I tried once, but it was such a disappointing experience, I never tried again. Thanks for the encouragement! Your recipe is so much simplier to do than the one I tried. I hope they are as good as they sound!!
  • I've always wanted to know how to do this!! hummmmm....going to have to try this!!
  • Jamie
I made these this evening. They were so good. I re-named them oh...my...tortillas. That is what we said after we had our 1st bite. Even my kids said these were better than store bought. And they want me to make these from now on. That is also coming from my son who is EXTREMELY picky!!! Thanks so much. I tried another recipe for tortillas and it was BAD!!! I`m so glad to have found this one.

To make whole wheat tortillas, would I need dough enhancers?
  • I'm a chef in Arizona and recently was asked how to make these. You've done a good job explaining. The Mexican lady I learned from always uses boiling water, this partially cooks the dough and you don't need flour on your board. It also will allow you to have pretty thin tortillas. Food storage rocks! I love how you're bringing it home to everyone. I think we are soul sisters!
  • I can't wait to make these!!! I have tried homemade tortillas before but they were so difficult to handle. My forearms were dead by the time I was done rolling them out. Thanks for posting this!
  • Oh yeah, and I do it by hand, like making biscuits.
  • I have been making our tortillas for a while now. (Not all the time, I admit I buy them sometimes). The recipe that I use as a fail safe uses shortening, but I have used a low fat one like this before. Of course, I inherited several cans of it when my parents moved cross country and left thier food storage behind. I prefer to use half white and half whole wheat in mine (all whole wheat dry out really fast in my experience).

Not the way my grandmother makes them, but definitely a lot quicker! I'll have to try this for dinner tonight.

Have you made this recipe with whole wheat flour?
  • gaby
yes you an do it in a kitchen id with the dough hook on it I even do my recipe in a bread maker for 10 -15 min. then Im ready to go so I don't let them rest . and I personally don't like to use a grill because they don't cook good, so I like to use a pan in the stove I always put 2 pans and let them heat in a medium heat and the tortillas are beautiful well cook and when you have boubbles in the tortilla that's a good sing the your tortillas are going to be soft and good and well cooked.
and the more hot the water is the better so that's why is better to do it on a machine so you will not burn .
    enjoy!!!!

I love making homemade tortillas. I use a different recipe but it also calls for oil. I have always mixed it by hand and it has been fine. If you are going to use shortening, a food processor would be a much easier method.

How many tortillas will this recipe make?
  • cutiepie
I am excited to try this recipe. In the past when I've made tortillas they are too thick and hard. And not edible, lol. I will try again with your tips and recipe. Thanks.
  • Looks so yummy! Thanks for all your great recipes! BTW, cute top - mind if I ask where you bought it?

Can the dough be prepared in anything besides a food processor? I don't have one, but I have a Kitchen Aid. Would something like that work as well?
